Creating Outdoor Spaces You’ll Actually Use This Fall

There’s something about fall in Utah that makes you want to spend more time outside. Cooler evenings, changing leaves, crisp air—and finally, temperatures that make sitting on the patio feel comfortable again.

But if your outdoor space is just a collection of mismatched chairs and a grill you haven't touched in months, you probably aren't using it as much as you could.

The good news? You don't need a huge backyard or an expensive renovation to create an outdoor space you’ll actually enjoy this fall.

Here are a few simple ways to make your backyard, patio, or deck feel like an extension of your home.

1. Start With Comfortable Seating

If you aren't comfortable, you aren't going to stay outside very long.

Before buying more décor, look at your seating. Arrange chairs and sofas so they encourage conversation rather than simply lining the edges of the patio.

Add outdoor cushions and a few weather-resistant pillows. If your space is small, even two comfortable chairs and a small table can create the perfect place for morning coffee or an evening outside.

2. Add Warm Outdoor Lighting

Outdoor lighting might be one of my favorite inexpensive upgrades.

String lights, lanterns, pathway lights, and sconces can completely change how a backyard feels once the sun goes down.

And with fall days getting shorter, good lighting means you can continue enjoying your outdoor space well into the evening.

Tip: Put your outdoor lights on a timer or smart plug so they automatically turn on around sunset.

3. Create a Gathering Spot

Give people a reason to go outside.

A fire pit is an obvious fall favorite, but it doesn't have to be elaborate. Depending on your space and local regulations, a portable fire pit surrounded by comfortable seating can instantly create a gathering area.

No fire pit? A coffee table, outdoor dining table, or conversation area can accomplish the same thing.

The goal is to create a destination—not just an empty patio.

4. Bring Out the Blankets

This may be the easiest fall update of all.

Keep a basket of outdoor-friendly blankets near the back door so they're easy to grab when temperatures drop.

Add a few pillows in warmer textures and seasonal colors, and suddenly your summer patio feels ready for fall without replacing everything you already own.

5. Don't Forget the Landscaping

Your summer flowers may be fading, but your landscaping doesn't have to look tired.

Clean up dead plants, trim overgrown shrubs, refresh mulch, and add a few fall-friendly plants or planters near your patio and entryway.

A little cleanup can make the entire backyard feel more intentional.

And if you're thinking about selling, don't underestimate this step. Buyers notice outdoor spaces.

6. Think About How You Really Live

This is where people sometimes go wrong.

They create the outdoor space they think they're supposed to have instead of one they'll actually use.

If you love entertaining, create a dining and conversation area.

If you'd rather curl up with a book, invest in one really comfortable chair.

Love watching football? Maybe your ideal setup includes an outdoor TV.

Morning coffee person? A small bistro table might be all you need.

Your outdoor space should fit your lifestyle, not a magazine cover.

7. Make It Easy to Use

The more work it takes to enjoy your backyard, the less likely you are to use it.

Keep cushions accessible. Store blankets nearby. Have a place for drinks. Make sure lighting is easy to turn on.

Simple conveniences are often what turn a pretty outdoor space into one you actually use.

8. Think About Resale Value, Too

Outdoor living spaces have become an important part of how buyers evaluate a home.

You don't necessarily need an expensive outdoor kitchen or elaborate landscaping. Buyers often respond just as well to a space that helps them imagine how they could live there.

A clean patio, comfortable seating, good lighting, attractive landscaping, and a defined gathering area can make an ordinary backyard feel like an additional living space.

Enjoy Your Home Now

Not every home project needs to be about resale value.

Sometimes the best improvements are the ones that make you enjoy the home you already have.

Fall doesn't last forever in Utah, so take advantage of those beautiful evenings while you can. Add some lights, grab a blanket, invite a few friends over, and actually use that backyard!

And if you're thinking about selling in the next 6–12 months, I'd be happy to walk through your home and help you identify the updates—inside and outside—that could make the biggest difference when it's time to sell.

Your home should work for the way you live today while helping you prepare for where you're headed next.
