by Amy Atkinson

If you're looking at homes in Herriman, UT, you're probably also looking at schools. That makes sense. Herriman has grown from a small farm town into one of the Salt Lake Valley's busiest family communities, and Jordan School District has added new buildings to keep up. The newest is Juniper Elementary, which opened in August 2024. Herriman also has three tuition-free charter schools inside city limits.

I'm Amy Atkinson, a Realtor and Associate Broker with Presidio Real Estate – River Heights. I've helped families buy and sell across the southwest valley since 2005. Below is every public and charter school serving Herriman for the 2026-27 school year, followed by the questions parents ask me most.

A Parent's Guide: Your Herriman School Questions, Answered

How do school boundaries work in Herriman?

Jordan School District assigns every address to one elementary, one middle, and one high school. The schools are organized into "feeder" groups that flow into each high school. Herriman is split between two of them:

  • Herriman High feeder: Bastian, Oak Leaf, and Silver Crest elementaries feed Copper Mountain Middle, then Herriman High.
  • Mountain Ridge High feeder: Blackridge, Butterfield Canyon, Herriman, Ridge View, and Juniper elementaries feed Fort Herriman Middle or South Hills Middle, then Mountain Ridge High.

The district draws boundaries with mapping software, input from the school board and city leaders, and public comment. Boundaries can change as new neighborhoods fill in. In fast-growing Herriman, that happens more often than in older, built-out cities.

How can I check which schools a specific address feeds into?

Don't rely on a listing sheet, a school's name, or "the closest school." Check the address itself:

  1. Open Jordan School District's School Boundary Look Up tool.
  2. Type in the full street address of the home.
  3. The tool shows the assigned elementary, middle, and high school for that address.

You can also view the district's current boundary maps at planning.jordandistrict.org/boundaries. When I help buyers, I run this check on every home before we write an offer, not after.

Are any boundary changes coming to Herriman?

Yes. Jordan School District has proposed boundary adjustments for the 2027-28 school year that touch several Herriman schools. The biggest is in the Juniper Crest area: about 200 elementary students would move from Juniper and Ridge View to Blackridge Elementary. About 150 middle schoolers would move from South Hills to Fort Herriman Middle, with the Mountain View Corridor becoming the dividing line.

A smaller change in Homestead at Butterfield would move about 11 students from Oak Leaf to Herriman Elementary. The district expects a final decision in late November. You can read the proposals at boundary.jordandistrict.org. If you're buying in one of these areas, it's worth knowing before you close.

What is open enrollment, and how does it work?

Open enrollment (Jordan School District calls these "School Choice Permits") lets your child apply to attend a public school other than the one your address is assigned to. There are three windows:

  • November 15 – December 31: requests for the next school year are sorted by category, priority, and/or lottery.
  • January 1 – the first Friday in February: requests are handled first-come, first-served.
  • After the first Friday in February: late requests are considered based on each school's staffing.

Parents provide transportation for open-enrollment students; district buses don't pick them up. Approved permits generally carry forward from year to year. Seats depend on space, so a permit is never guaranteed. Full details are on the district's School Choice page.

How do charter schools work?

Charter schools in Utah are free public schools that any Utah student can apply to, no matter where they live. You apply directly to each school. When a charter gets more applications than seats, state law requires a lottery, with certain preferences allowed (such as siblings of current students). Deadlines vary by school, so check each school's website early. Many families apply in the winter for the following fall.

Where can I see test scores and school data?

The Utah State Board of Education publishes a School Report Card for every public and charter school, including test results and other measures. The Utah Data Gateway also lets you compare schools side by side. I always suggest pairing the numbers with a visit. Walk the halls, meet the principal, and ask about class sizes.

How do schools affect home values in Herriman?

Schools are one of the first things families ask about, and that demand shows up when it's time to sell. A home's assigned schools don't change its square footage, but they do shape who's shopping for it.

In Herriman, that plays out in a few specific ways:

  • Feeder pattern matters to buyers. Buyers with kids often narrow their search to one high school feeder (Herriman High or Mountain Ridge), which can concentrate demand on the homes inside it.
  • Walkability to a school is a selling point. Being close to a school like Silver Crest, Butterfield Canyon, or Blackridge is a feature I highlight in listings.
  • Boundary changes can shift demand. When a boundary moves, the homes affected can gain or lose appeal with certain buyers. That's why I watch the district's proposals closely.

If you're selling, knowing exactly which schools your address feeds, and saying so plainly in your listing, is one of the easiest ways to reach the right buyers.

Questions to Ask When You're House Shopping in Herriman

  1. Which schools is this exact address assigned to today?
  2. Is this neighborhood part of any proposed boundary change for 2027-28?
  3. How do the assigned schools compare with nearby charters like Providence Hall or Salt Lake Academy?
  4. What will the school-day routine look like: bus, walk, or carpool?
  5. How does this home's price compare with other homes in the same feeder pattern?
