American Fork has grown from 33,337 residents in 2020 to an estimated 41,020 today — nearly 23% growth in five years. Much of that growth is fueled by its location just minutes from the Silicon Slopes tech corridor, combined with a historic downtown and established community character that newer neighboring cities don't have.

The city was first settled in 1850 and incorporated in 1852 as Lake City. It was renamed American Fork in 1860, after the American Fork River, to avoid confusion with Salt Lake City. Today its historic downtown—centered on Main and Center Streets—still features Greek Revival and Victorian architecture, including an old city hall listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Mount Timpanogos Utah Temple, dedicated in 1996, overlooks the city from the foot of Mount Timpanogos. Nearby American Fork Canyon and Timpanogos Cave National Monument draw visitors year-round. The city is also known as the hometown of author Brandon Sanderson and former congresswoman Mia Love, and parts of the movies Footloose and The Sandlot were filmed in the area.
